Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

The Cause of the Recent Dispute

Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following Denver's remarkable comeback win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
