For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play the prequel play.
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.
Based on what is understood of his research, the case would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the container could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the influence of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the entity in the past.
His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
