The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
